Baxter Alternative Learning Center was established in 1997 as an alternative education program for students of the Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools.  Baxter provides an opportunity for students, who would otherwise be excluded, to continue their educational experience.  It is situated at 3515 Gallatin Pike and is located in the Inglewood area of Nashville. 

Inglewood consists of 8,364 housing units in a land area of 7 square miles.  The population of Inglewood is approximately 19,132.  The demographic of this area are:  12,682 Caucasians, 5,703 African Americans, 85 Native Americans, 169, Asian Americans, and 2 Native Hawaiian citizens.  The median age is 37.7, the average household size is 2.40, and the median household income is $36,072.

The building facility faces Gallatin Road which consists of a variety of commercial businesses consisting of restaurants, drug stores, grocery stores, churches, service stations, banks, and small independently owned business establishments.  Behind the campus are residential single-family dwellings.  The school is served by the Metropolitan Transit Authority's route, with a stop directly in front of the building.
